Why Luxury's Next Status Symbol Isn't a Handbag—It's Your Health

By Monique Hogdson, founder

When I founded Mumble Forum in 2019, the conversations I was having with founders centred around growth, investment, visibility and scaling businesses. Today, those same conversations sound very different.

Women are talking about hormones, burnout, nervous system regulation, sleep, cognitive performance and longevity. They're asking how to build successful businesses without sacrificing their health in the process. That shift tells us something important.

Wellness is no longer a niche category or an occasional luxury. It's becoming one of the defining priorities of modern life—and nowhere is that more evident than within the luxury sector.

Wellness Has Become the New Luxury

This isn't simply anecdotal; it's one of the biggest commercial shifts we're seeing globally.

The global health and wellness market is projected to grow from £5.4 trillion in 2025 to £8.2 trillion by 2030, representing an annual growth rate of 8.7%. That growth is being fuelled by rising health awareness, longer life expectancy and a fundamental shift towards wellness as a lifestyle rather than a luxury.

At the same time, Deloitte reports that 76% of affluent consumers now consider wellness a core part of their identity, rather than simply another lifestyle purchase.

To me, that's one of the clearest indicators of where consumer behaviour is heading. People are no longer buying products alone; they're investing in how they feel. They're prioritising preventative healthcare over reactive treatment, experiences over possessions and longevity over instant gratification.

In many ways, wellbeing has become the ultimate luxury. It's no longer about owning the most expensive handbag or staying in the most exclusive hotel. Today's luxury consumer wants to wake up feeling energised, think more clearly, perform at their best and enjoy a longer, healthier life. Health has become the new status symbol, and the brands recognising this shift are leading the next era of luxury.

Luxury Brands Are Quietly Repositioning Themselves

Once you begin looking, it's impossible to ignore. Luxury hospitality brands are investing heavily in longevity clinics, recovery programmes and preventative health experiences.

Performance brands are moving beyond products to create communities centred around movement and wellbeing.

Fashion houses are embracing conversations around mindfulness, comfort and self-expression. Even automotive brands are entering the wellness conversation through performance, recovery and lifestyle experiences.

These businesses understand something fundamental. Luxury is no longer defined solely by what we own. It's increasingly defined by how well we live.

The brands creating meaningful, transformative experiences, not simply selling premium products, are building deeper, longer-lasting relationships with their audiences.

Why We Created ELEVATE Summit?

Watching these conversations evolve inside the Mumble Forum community made us realise there was a gap in the market. There were wellness festivals. There were business conferences. There were networking events. But there wasn't an elevated space where entrepreneurs could sit beside doctors, where nutritionists could exchange ideas with investors, where founders could learn from neuroscientists, and where conversations about women's health, longevity, AI, preventative medicine and balancing wellness with entrepreneurship all happened under one roof.

That's why we created ELEVATE. Not simply as another event, but as a platform where business, innovation, science and community could come together to shape the future of wellbeing.

What Surprised Me Most

This year, ELEVATE returned for its second edition and doubled in size, welcoming more than 800 attendees, 36 speakers, 16 expert panels and 7 immersive wellness experiences to London's Fulham Pier. Of course, seeing the growth was incredibly rewarding. But what struck me most wasn't the attendance. It was the conversations.

People weren't looking for quick fixes or the latest wellness facts, They wanted credible information. They wanted science. They wanted trusted experts.

The biggest discussions weren't about aesthetics; they were about healthspan, hormones, sleep, nervous system regulation, cognitive performance and how to live healthier for longer.

Wellness has matured. Consumers are becoming more informed, more discerning and more intentional about where they invest both their time and their money.

The Biggest Opportunity for Brands

For businesses, this presents one of the greatest commercial opportunities of the next decade, but it also comes with responsibility.

Consumers can recognise performative wellness almost instantly. They're looking for authenticity. They're looking for expertise. Most importantly, they're looking for communities they genuinely trust.

The brands that will lead the future won't simply market wellness. They'll educate. They'll create meaningful experiences. They'll facilitate conversations that help people make better decisions about their health, careers and lives.

Community has become a competitive advantage. Trust has become a luxury. And genuine connection has never been more valuable.

I believe we're only at the beginning of this movement. The conversations taking place around longevity, women's health, preventative medicine and human performance today will become the mainstream conversations of tomorrow.

As founders, we have an opportunity, not just to respond to changing consumer behaviour, but to help shape it. For me, that's exactly what ELEVATE represents.

A place where innovation meets community, where science meets entrepreneurship, and where people leave not only inspired, but genuinely better informed.

Because the future of luxury isn't simply about what we own. It's about how well we live. And I believe that's the most valuable investment any of us can make.
