In a world increasingly focused on quick fixes and convenience, Lisa Pelloso stands as a beacon of holistic health and wellness. Her journey began at the tender age of 19, when a move from the picturesque canals of Venice to the bustling streets of London led to a profound awakening. Faced with severe stomach issues and an emergency surgery that shook her to her core, Lisa sought answers in the realm of nutrition. This pivotal moment ignited a passion that would transform her life and the lives of countless others.

Graduating from the College of Naturopathic Medicine, Lisa now combines her expertise with the serene backdrop of Villa Porto Rapallo, a sanctuary she acquired in 2021 to host transformative wellness retreats. Here, she invites guests to embark on a personal journey towards empowerment and rejuvenation, offering tailored experiences rooted in the principles of naturopathy. Join us as we explore Lisa’s inspiring story, her holistic philosophy, and the enriching retreats that have become a haven for those seeking to reclaim their well-being.
1. Can you share more about the pivotal moment that led you to transition from a lifestyle influenced by convenience foods to a focus on holistic health?
The turning point in my journey to holistic health came at 25, after years of suffering from haemorrhoids and undergoing surgery. Post-surgery, the surgeon revealed my colon was severely damaged and warned me to change my diet or face the same procedure again the following year, recommending that I see a nutritionist. Shocked that no one had linked my condition to food before, I started seeing nutritionists who opened my eyes to the healing power of food. They taught me that what we eat can harm or heal, and this realisation not only transformed my health but inspired my passion for helping others through nutrition.
2. What were some of the biggest challenges you faced during your journey into nutrition and wellness, and how did you overcome them?
One of the biggest challenges I faced during my journey into nutrition and wellness was learning about chemistry and biology—subjects I had never studied before. When I enrolled at the College of Naturopathic Medicine, I was transitioning from a 25-year career in fashion, where I had worked in sales for brands like Tateossian, Calvin Klein, and Ralph Lauren. Diving into medicine and biology in my first year felt completely new and, at times, overwhelming. Yet, it was also incredibly fascinating and rewarding.
Nutrition is such a dynamic and ever-evolving science. For example, vitamins—now a cornerstone of health—were only discovered in 1912 by Casimir Funk, a Polish biochemist, who identified that the absence of specific “vital substances” in the diet could cause diseases like scurvy, beriberi, and rickets. This discovery laid the foundation for modern nutrition science, and learning about these breakthroughs gave me a deep appreciation for the field. This learning process fuelled my passion for the field and its potential to transform lives.

3. What motivated you to pursue a diploma in Naturopathic Nutrition, and how has that education influenced your approach to health?
After my surgery, I became deeply curious about nutrition and started educating myself through books and consultations with nutritionists. Over time, I noticed a pattern among my friends and colleagues at Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren—they frequently complained about their health and relied on various medications without seeing real results.
This motivated me to share what I was learning, offering insights and practical advice that could help them make tangible lifestyle and nutritional changes. Seeing the positive impact of these conversations sparked a passion in me to support others on a deeper level. Pursuing a diploma in Naturopathic Nutrition felt like a natural next step, allowing me to formalise my knowledge and equip myself to guide others in achieving lasting health and wellness.
5. Can you explain the principles of naturopathy and how they inform your work with clients?
Naturopathy is a holistic system of healthcare that encourages the body’s natural self-healing mechanisms using tools like nutrition, fasting, hydrotherapy, naturopathic manipulations, herbal medicine, acupuncture, homeopathy, and more. Its core principle is treating the whole person, not just the symptom, by considering physical, mental, genetic, environmental, and social factors.
As a Naturopathic Nutritionist, I follow these principles by understanding that food is a powerful tool for healing. I work with clients to use whole, organic foods as medicine, incorporating detoxification and cleansing protocols when appropriate. I take time to understand not just the symptoms but the root cause of their health concerns, looking at their overall constitution and lifestyle. This personalised, client-centred approach allows me to guide individuals towards sustainable health and wellness.
9. In your view, what are the most common misconceptions people have about holistic health and wellness?
One of the most common misconceptions about holistic health and wellness is that it’s either too restrictive or overly complicated. Many people think it requires giving up everything they enjoy or following an extreme lifestyle, but holistic health is really about balance and finding what works best for each individual. It’s not about perfection but progress—small, sustainable changes that lead to long-term well-being.
Another misconception is that holistic practices are not evidence-based. In reality, many aspects, like nutrition, mindfulness, and herbal medicine, are supported by extensive research. Holistic health combines traditional wisdom with modern science to treat the root cause of health issues, not just the symptoms.
Finally, people often assume holistic wellness is “one size fits all.” On the contrary, it’s deeply personalised, taking into account physical, mental, emotional, and even social factors. It’s about treating the whole person and empowering individuals to take an active role in their health journey.
